The Woodwind Company has been a major player in the advancement of woodwind instruments for many years. This company has a reputation for great pieces which precedes them.
When talking about WWCO mouthpieces. There are many eras of pieces which we focus on in the effort to differentiate which pieces we might be talking about at any given time. As with most other pieces, the best way to determine the era of any specific mouthpiece would be with the markings on the piece. The fonts used, how deep the marking is, the location of the marking, the combination of markings used together, and more.
The Woodwind Company was started by Walter Gemeindhardt in 1918. The pieces from the earliest eras would often be marked with The Woodwind Co and would often say New York. These markings would be on the front of the mouthpiece (Opposite the Table). Other early owners of the company were also notable figures in the clarinet world. One being Eugene Bercioux and John Schmidt.
The early pieces were faced using a facing machine which Eugene Bercioux patented. I believe this is the reason for the “Patent Process” and other patent related markings on the pieces. I believe Charles Chedeville even used some of the early blanks made by the WWCO, when the “Steel Ebonite” was indicated on the front.
Later in the timeline of the company, WWCO was bought out by Leblanc. This era may be referred to as a Leblanc Era Woodwind Company mouthpiece. Leblanc was also a major seller of wwco mouthpieces before they acquired the company.
The woodwind company has held a high standard for the quality of their mouthpieces throughout history and this is why they are so highly coveted and played by the masses.
