his listing is for a vintage Beechler alto saxophone mouthpiece. It is the model commonly known as a "diamond dot" due to its distinctive bite plate inlay. I believe these were made in the late 1940's or early 50's. This one is stamped with the serial number 3122 on one side, and the facing number 3S on the other. The "S" presumably indicates a short facing curve. The tip opening is quite close, measuring in at .055".
This mouthpiece is in excellent condition. It could almost pass for brand new! There are no cracks, chips, or other damage. The facing is perfectly smooth. The horizontal mill markings are still visible throughout the table and all the way up to, and on the tip rail. This indicates it has never been refaced. There are no tooth indentations on the bite plate. You couldn't ask for a nicer one!
This Beechler is a fantastic player. I thought that the small tip opening would be unplayable for me, but it really doesn't feel that restrictive when paired with a stiffer reed (such as a Vandoren Java 3.5). It speaks easily in all registers, including the altissimo. The tone is bright and focused. It is definitely reminiscent of Earl Bostic, who played a black diamond dot.
