This listing is for a vintage F. Gulliford (Paris France) alto saxophone mouthpiece. This piece most likely dates to the 1920's, or thereabouts. The design is typical of that era. It has a very large round chamber, and deeply scooped inner side walls. The tip opening is quite close, measuring in at just .052". A couple other interesting features of this mouthpiece are the knurled ring on the shank, and the side channels, which appear to be for a slide on ligature (not included). This mouthpiece is made of hard rubber, not plastic. It is actually stamped "Steel Vulcanite", which is another term for hard rubber.
This mouthpiece is in very good used condition. The tip, table, and rails are perfectly smooth, and original. There is no tooth wear on the beak. The rubber is a bit discolored from age, but this is purely cosmetic in nature. It has been cleaned/sanitized.
This is a really nice player too. It is definitely in the realm of a classical mouthpiece, if for no other reason than the small tip opening. It plays with a very pure, bell like, quality. It isn't at all stuffy or tubby like many mouthpieces from this era. If you like smaller tip openings paired with harder reeds, this might be just the ticket for you. It would also be great for any pre-WWII era alto that requires a large chamber mouthpiece for proper tuning.
