his listing is for a vintage Vandoren paris alto saxophone mouthpiece.
This model was introduced in the late 1930's, and was known as the "Perfecta"
. It is a very finely crafted mouthpiece, with nicely balanced side rails, and a nice thin tip rail. It is made of hard rubber, not plastic. It has slightly undercut (but not scooped) inner side walls, and a round chamber. The chamber is smaller than the interior of the shank, creating a noticeable 'step' in the bore of the mouthpiece. This piece is marked 3, both on top, and on the side. The tip opening measures .068", which is just a hair larger than a Selmer C*. This is, by the way, a 'slim line' or 'streamline' style mouthpiece, meaning it has a smaller body than a typical alto sax mouthpiece, and thus needs a smaller ligature. I used a small-ish clarinet ligature for testing purposes.
This mouthpiece is in excellent used condition.
The tip, table, and rails are perfectly smooth, and there are no tooth indentations on the beak. There is some mild discoloration due to age, but overall it looks quite good. This mouthpiece has had a detailed cleaning to remove calcification, and has been sanitized.
This is a very nice player, in my opinion. It is definitely in the realm of a 'classical' mouthpiece. It speaks easily with a rich, dark tone. It is a bit more mellow than many of the modern classical mouthpieces (such as the Selmer S80, and even newer Vandorens). Those pieces can get a little thin, especially up top, but this one has a nice broad tone throughout all registers, including the altissimo. This piece will definitely outplay just about any new off the shelf mouthpiece!
